Michael Ozanian and Kurt Badenhausen have compiled their annual valuations of all 30 franchises in the National Hockey League for Forbes magazine, with the Toronto Maple Leafs ranked as the #1 most valuable at $448 million, a 9 percent increase in value from the year prior while posting a mind-boggling $66.4 million in operating income, a measure of profit. As reported by Forbes: The 2007-08 season was the National Hockey League's most successful since Forbes began tracking team values 10 years ago.
Fueled by higher ticket prices and a stronger Canadian dollar, revenue increased 13%, to an average of $92 million per team, while operating income (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) rose 48%, to $4.7 million per team.
A stronger loonie helps teams north of the border, because they take in revenue in Canadian dollars, but pay their players in U.S. currency. Last season the value of the Canadian dollar increased 15% relative to the U.S. dollar. The average team value rose 10% during the past year, to $220 million. Five of the six Canadian teams —Montreal Canadiens, Vancouver Canucks, Ottawa Senators, Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers— rose in value more than the league average. Of the 30 franchises, Forbes reports that twelve posted operating losses – all Stateside – including the Predators (-$1.3 mil), Flyers (-$1.8 mil), Bruins (-$3 mil), Thrashers (-$6.1 mil), Capitals (-$6.9 mil), Blue Jackets (-$7.1 mil), Blues (-$8.6 mil), Islanders (-$8.8 mil), Sabres (-$8.9 mil), Panthers (-$9.4 mil), Coyotes (-$9.7 mil), and Hurricanes (-$11.5 mil). The National Hockey League (NHL), Scotiabank and CBC are teaming up to launch the first ever fan-driven NHL award -- the ScotiaBank NHL Fan Fav Award, an all-new, award given to the player who NHL fans vote to be the best overall Regular Season performer. The award will be presented by one lucky fan to the winner at the 2009 NHL Awards. “Scotiabank NHL Fan Fav Award is the NHL’s first ever fan-driven award and gives hockey fans across the country a real voice in their game,” said John Doig, Senior Vice-President of Marketing for Scotiabank. “Canadians are passionate about hockey and this is a brand new way for them to really get in the game.” Starting October 11th, at the end of each week the NHL will evaluate player performances from the previous week, choosing the three players who have demonstrated the best skills and strongest overall performance during that week. Those players will then be revealed each Saturday night on NHL.com and during CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada telecast. Fans will be directed to vote for their Scotiabank NHL Fan Fav Award on NHL.com. With each vote, fans will be entered into a weekly draw to win NHL prizes. At the conclusion of the NHL regular season in April, all of the weekly Scotiabank NHL Fan Fav Award nominees from the regular season will be evaluated by a panel of NHL experts to narrow the list to 10 finalists. Fans will then have one more opportunity to vote at NHL.com for the winner. When the Stanley Cup Playoffs end, the votes will be tallied and one lucky voting fan will win a trip for two to the NHL Awards where the winner will make hockey history by presenting the Scotiabank NHL Fan Fav Award to the winning player on CBC’s live broadcast. ”We are excited to work with Scotiabank on this innovative initiative that brings NHL fans together,” said Keith Wachtel, Senior Vice-President, Corporate Sales & Marketing for the NHL. “The Scotiabank NHL Fan Fav Award is one more way we’re letting fans have a more personal experience with the NHL.” Full details of the contest are available at NHL.com. But did she say, "You betcha" to the offer?
Alaska Governor, and Republican Vice-Presidential running mate Sarah Palin will join the winner of the Philadelphia Flyers regional search for the “Ultimate Hockey Mom” contest and drop the puck at the ceremonial opening face-off as the home team Flyers host the New York Rangers at the Wachovia Center on Saturday, October 11 at 7 p.m. “Because of the tremendous amount of publicity she has brought to our sport, we invited the most popular hockey mom in North America to our home opener to help us get our season started,” said Comcast-Spectacor Chairman Ed Snider who founded the Flyers in 1967. “We are very excited she has accepted our offer and we are very proud of the publicity she is generating for hockey moms and the sport of hockey.” The Flyers have been searching for the ultimate hockey mom in the Greater Philadelphia Region through an on line contest which asked hockey players or hockey moms themselves to submit their hockey mom poster to the team. Hockey moms and players were encouraged to submit posters showing their hockey mom pride and their loyalty and dedication to the sport via the team’s website, philadelphiaflyers.com, by October 7. The team will award all hockey moms entered into the contest with a free "puck-er peach" lipstick and four tickets to a Philadelphia Phantoms hockey game. The winner will appear on the ice with Palin for opening face-off. Source: Philadelphia Flyers OTHER NEWS ACROSS THE BUSINESS OF SPORTS NETWORK |
