The Devils had a chance to rework the contract after it was rejected, and could have avoided the risk of fines altogether. They didn't want to do that, and this is the result.
They're also fortunate it didn't count against the cap, as the CBA indicates (minimum fine/cap penalty: 1 million). The bargain worked out between the lawyers of the NHL and the NHLPA really helped them there. - DMon, 13 Sep 2010 20:46:26 +0100
