THIS IS BREAKING NEWS...

Paul Kelly, the head of players union for the National Hockey League was fired on Sunday night after several hours of meetings in Chicago. The decision was made by a vote from the NHLPA’s 30 player reps that comprise its Executive Board.

The NHLPA released a statement Monday morning saying, “Following the Executive Board’s review of the overall operation of the NHLPA, it was decided that Paul Kelly should no longer continue to serve as Executive Director. We appreciate Mr. Kelly’s service to our Association."

The Executive Board will immediately begin putting together a search committee that will identify and interview potential candidates for the vacant Executive Director’s position

As reported by Darren Dreger of TSN.ca:

Kelly spent much of Sunday night waiting in a corridor outside the boardroom while the executive board deliberated, twice inviting interim ombudsman, Buzz Hargrove in to the discussions before a final vote and decision was made.

Kelly was then informed of the firing with NHLPA general council Ian Penny.

According to Liz Mullen of the SportsBusiness Journal, before the vote, “the players were scheduled to hear two reports – including one from a five-player committee and a human resources consulting firm that was quietly hired earlier this summer to investigate the internal workings of the union.”

There have been rumblings that Kelly might be getting too close to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly. Kelly was also reportedly at odds with Buzz Hargrove, and according to Mullen, “at least one member of the union’s outside advisory committee”, as well as Ian Penny.
